Ambassador Vincent De Visscher tours NUREP projects Between 17th and 20th November 2009, the Head of Delegation of European Commission to Uganda Ambassador Vincent De Visscher toured NUREP projects in Gulu, Lira, Kitgum and Pader. ![]() During the tour, the ambassador together with the Minister of State for Northern Uganda, represented by the Commissioner for PRDP Ms. Elisabeth Allimadi Ociti, commissioned Palaro Sub county headquarters, Madi Opei Police Post in Kitgum and the LCV Chairperson for Gulu. The two officials also paid courtesy calls on the district leaders of Kitgum and Pader and made an assessment of on-going works at Anwata Primary and Latanya Health Centre II in Lira and Pader districts respectively. During the commissioning of Palaro Sub county headquarters building, ambassador revealed that the relationship between the EU and Northern Uganda is over 450 years old dating back to the day Sir Samuel Baker built a fort at Patiko in Palaro Sub County. “There is a long and rich history between the EU and this area. He [Baker] built a fort and one of his missions was to end slavery. Today we build a fort for democracy” De Visscher said. Adding that, “I am happy to have my name alongside that of the minister on this fort for democracy.” At the same function, the Ambassador was given a Luo name, Olara which means “you have saved me”. The ambassador attended the Inter District Coordination Meeting for Acholi sub region and Adjumani District held on 18th November 2009 at Pearl Afrique Hotel in Gulu. The was attended by the RDCs of Pader and Kitgum, the LC V Chairpersons of Amuru, Pader and Kitgum districts, as well as the CAOs for Pader, Kitgum, Gulu and Adjumani districts. During the meeting, the district leaders commended NUREP’s work noting that the Programme had addressed the right aspects, had been participatory and exhibited a high level of transparency and accountability. “I am happy with NUREP. Their contribution is there to see. They have been fast and smart and we can see their progress and appreciate it, said Mr. John Ogwok, the LCV Chairperson for Kitgum District.” The ambassador briefed the district leaders about the new € 20 million EU funded agriculture and livelihoods improvement covering Acholi, Lango and Teso. The ambassador also visited beneficiaries that have received oxen and ploughs from Oxfam as well as income generating activities from Concerned Parents Association (CPA). |
