The Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme (NUREP)

 The Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme (NUREP) in June 2008 bade farewell to its pioneer Programme Manager Mr. Gael Griette. Mr. Griette was with the Programme since its inception in December 2006. We thank him greatly for his contibution and wish him well in his future endeavours.

Mr. Griette has been replaced by Mr. Reint Bakema, who took office in July 2008. Mr. Bakema brings in 25 year experience from the private, government and donor sectors. He has 15 years of working experience in Uganda, during which he worked as a technical advisor with the Wetlands Department in the Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment. He also worked for three years as a Programme Officer with the European Delegation to Uganda. As a freelance consultant he has executed a large number of consultancies across Africa and beyond.  

NUREP aims at strengthening the self reliance of and protection of local populations in Northern Uganda, rehabilitating social infrastructure and improving the capacity of Ugandan stakeholders to respond to conflicts and disasters. NUREP is thus integrated into the Government’s Peace Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) and builds on previous European Union funded Acholi and Karamoja Programmes.

Overall, the programme is making considerable progress, since most of the contracts with grantees and rehabilitation contractors have been signed. We expect to see a lot of activity in the districts by the end of August 2008. NUREP will continue to involve partners and communities in all stages of implementation. NUREP will ensure that it consistently corresponds with the needs of communities at all times.
