 NUREP 2nd Runners up in Visibility Competition

award ceremonyNorthern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme (NUREP) has scooped second runners up position in the 2009 EU Communication Trophy.

Presiding over the award giving ceremony, the Minister for Information and National Guidance Hon. Kabakumba Masiko noted that communication is a sign of accountability. She noted that the NRM Government supports free press and democracy and a vibrant multiparty democracy system.

She reiterated Government’s commitment to the access to information for everyone noting that access to information is a right for everyone in Uganda.

The overall winner was the Human Rights and Good Governance Programme (HRGGP), while the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme was first runners up.  Developing Human Resources for Health Project came in fourth.

In his remarks, the EU Ambassador, Vincent De Visscher lauded visibility as the window through which you can see accountability, noting further that communication is about quality.

During the event, Mr. John Njoroge a journalist working with The Independent was presented with the Lorenzo Natalie Diploma Award for his award winning article on a youth that was tortured by Ugandan security forces. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Njoroge decried the shackles under which the media work in Uganda. He noted that access to information in Uganda remains a mirage.

The EU Communication Trophy is an annual competition between EU funded programmes in Uganda now in its second year. In the inaugural edition, NUREP was in fourth position while the winner was the Sawlog Production Grants Scheme.  

Ambassador Visscher confirmed that the competition will continue.
